Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
