A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
